As a blogger with ten years under my belt, the question I’m asked most is “How do you make money blogging?” I always indulge an answer, but enjoy asking people what they think FIRST. You would not believe some of the stipulations I’ve heard about blogging in general, but blogging for profit… they are all pretty standard. Today I’m going to debunk four myths about making money as a blogger.

All bloggers make money.
First off, not ALL bloggers make money. Just because you have a dot com where you write your thoughts doesn’t mean you will earn a salary. My blog actually costs money to exist! SOME bloggers make money and there are many ways that a blogger can make money, but effort is always involved.
It’s EASY to make money blogging.
The most passive myth about blogging is that it an EASY thing to do. If making money blogging was as simple as writing a blog post, we’d all be rich. From applying to blog campaigns to pitching brands, from signing up for affiliate networks to setting up ads on your blog, there is a lot of time and effort spent working towards a dollar.

Making money with a blog happens quickly.
Blogging for profit is not as easy as it looks, nor does it happen fast. It took six years before I made a few dollars off my blog and there was a lot of work behind those dollars. I know bloggers who started monetizing their work just since months after launching their blog, but they hustled hard.
You can make so much money blogging.
Not all bloggers make enough money to call their earnings a salary (me included). Not only can your earnings be inconsistent, but the amount you’re paid for your work varies. The amount of money a blogger earns is all relative to a number of things. Bloggers are paid a rate for their work that’s calculated off of their pageviews, followers, content/photo quality, and time spent working.
I don’t make the same amount of money every month from blogging. Consider this: each brand pays a different amount even if I request the same rate for the same scope of work.
