Dance Me Daddy

One of my favorite Saturday night memories of us as a little family will forever be when a two year old Annabelle looked at Brandon and said, “Dance me Daddy.” He looked to me for a translation: she wanted to be lifted and twirled like the girls on So You Think You Can Dance. He complied and so began their weekend routine of partner dancing in the living room.

Not all little girls want to be ballerinas when they grow up. I recall loving dance when I was young, but being terrified of the stage. I took a year of ballet when I was three and quit right before the recital due to the stage fright. At ten years old I jumped back on the dance wagon and danced my butt off until/throughout college. I always hoped that if I had a daughter she would have the dance bug, but knew I should never pressure her.

Fast forward a year from the Dance Me Daddy night and our tiny dancer is in a real ballet class. After she sat through three hours of “The Nutcracker” with her grandparents, begged to dance on stage with the ballerinas, and requested a dance-themed birthday party, we knew she was ready for the real thing. We were lucky to test out a class when Annabelle’s best friend Rylee asked her to come to Bring a Friend to Ballet day. It’s been three weeks since we first attended CDA and Annabelle is obsessed.

We hope Annabelle loves to dance for as long as possible as it teaches dedication, discipline, and patience. Dance kept me busy (in the best way possible) five out of seven nights of the week throughout high school. I love the dance community and how I always had a safe place to go to leave my emotions on the floor during a routine.

Dance leotards are NOT cheap, so I was beyond thrilled to have Spongecake Leotards send Annabelle the most adorable pink polka dot leotard. Not only is pink Annabelle’s favorite color, but she loves the “scrunchy sleeves.” The leotard is made of cotton and lycra, so it’s both breathable and stretchy. All Spongecake Leotards are inexpensive and ready to ship in 1 business day. Whether your little girls needs a leotard for dance or play at home, you should definitely check out the shop!

Ann Whitbeck is the Owner/Designer of Spongecake Leotards. A former dancer and mother of three, Ann has been involved in the performing arts and fashion for over two decades.
